Domestic expertise is key

Ensuring the operational security of Iceland's energy infrastructure requires robust infrastructure services, specialised technical expertise, and rapid response capability. This was clearly demonstrated at a recently commissioned power station. HS Orka at Svartsengi, where HD played a key role in the installation of machinery.

The new power station is one of the most technically complex projects of its kind in Iceland and a major milestone in the ongoing development of geothermal energy on the Reykjanes Peninsula. The new turbine set significantly increases the plant's production capacity and strengthens the country's energy security.

Specialised technical work that matters

HD's specialised turbine and mechanical teams led the installation of the 55 MW steam turbine, the largest of its kind in Iceland. The turbine arrived in the country disassembled, and HD, for the first time, handled its entire on-site assembly, where precision and specialised knowledge were crucial.

HD also handled the installation of the 114-tonne generator and developed bespoke lifting and transport equipment to ensure its safe and millimetre-accurate positioning under challenging conditions. The company was also involved in the installation of the country's largest condenser, a project that placed significant demands on planning and coordination — particularly in light of seismic activity and volcanic eruptions during the construction period.
