HD sincerely congratulates HS Orka on the formal commissioning of the seventh power plant in Svartsengi, which took place at a ceremony this week. The new turbine is a 55 MW steam turbine and the largest of its kind in Iceland. This challenging and technically extensive project marks a major step in the ongoing development and sustainable utilisation of geothermal energy in the Reykjanes Peninsula.
The first sod for the expansion was cut at the end of 2022, and all work and time schedules were met despite unprecedented challenges during the construction period, including seismic activity, gas contamination and nine eruptions on the Sundhnúksgigarrow. This success is built on the professionalism and strong collaboration of all parties involved in the project.
HD was responsible for the installation of the hardware.
HD was one of three main contractors, alongside Ístaki and Rafal. HD's role involved the installation of the machinery on the new engine assembly, a task that required expertise, precision, and strong teamwork. We are proud to have contributed to this major advancement in energy processing in the region.

An important milestone for sustainable energy development
The expansion also includes upgrades to older equipment and is part of HS Orka's long-term strategy for the safe and sustainable utilisation of the geothermal resource. The assessment by the Planning Authority envisages a potential further expansion to up to 85 MW, provided the sustainability of the resource is assured.
