HD has played a key role in the seventh phase of the development of HS Orka's power plant in Svartsengi – one of the largest energy projects in the country at present. This is an ambitious and challenging project which involves a one-third capacity increase and significant improvements to the hot water production.
As has been reported in the news, another eruption began last night in the Sundhnúkur volcanic rift zone – the ninth in the series, or the twelfth since a new eruption period began on the Reykjanes Peninsula in March 2021. The eruption is not considered to threaten infrastructure, and no gas contamination is being detected at the site. Work at Svartsengi is therefore continuing – now with an active eruption in the background.
Volcanic eruptions are always magnificent and remind us of our precious and unpredictable coexistence with nature. It is incredible how quickly such natural disasters become part of the daily lives of those who work in the area.

Earthquakes have repeatedly necessitated temporary evacuations, but the operation has nevertheless continued with safety and resolve.
